Attending a Remembrance Sunday service in the UK is always something my family and I like to do. And so we were very grateful to be able to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, at a church in Copenhagen.

Britons, Danes, and numerous other nationalities including ambassadors, packed into Saint Alban’s this morning, the Anglican Church at Churchillparken in Denmark’s capital. It was a beautiful and poignant service as we remembered the 16 million people killed in the Great War and the 20 million wounded.

After the service, a memorial plaque was unveiled in Churchillparken by the British Ambassador. It’s in honour of the 175 men, from 11 countries, who were awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery in the war. Among those who received Britain’s highest award for valour were two Danes.

It may all seem a long time ago. But as British troops finally leave Afghanistan and other soldiers find themselves back in Iraq, the dangers of conflict never seem far away. Today was a day to remember – and to say thank you to all those who’ve given their lives for our freedom.
